Vehicle Collision at Nonesi Mall Raises Questions About CCTV Access
Vehicle Collision at Nonesi Mall: Centre Management Explains CCTV Policy

A vehicle collision in the Nonesi Mall parking area on Sunday, 18 January 2026, around midday, has drawn attention to how CCTV footage is handled following minor parking incidents.
Information received by Komani News indicates that a silver Polo Vivo was damaged while parked at the mall. Witnesses reported that another vehicle, described as a silver Audi, collided with the parked car and then left the area. The registration number was provided to the vehicle owner by members of the public who observed the incident.
The incident was reported to the police, and an accident report was opened. The vehicle owner also approached mall security seeking assistance, including a request to view CCTV footage. Security staff explained that footage could not be shared directly.
Komani News contacted centre management at Nonesi Mall for clarification. Management explained that CCTV footage is classified as personal information under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and is therefore legally protected.
As such, shopping centres cannot provide or display CCTV recordings directly to the public, except when required by law enforcement or through legal proceedings.
Management further confirmed that South African law requires all vehicle accidents, including minor parking incidents, to be reported to the police within 24 hours.
While footage cannot be shared directly, mall security reviews relevant footage internally and provides applicable details to assist motorists in completing police reports where legally permitted.
Once a case number has been issued and an investigating officer assigned, centre management stated that they remain fully committed to supporting the investigation and evidence-gathering process.
The incident highlights common misunderstandings about CCTV access and the legal responsibilities of property owners under POPIA, even in cases involving vehicle damage.
Komani News advises motorists involved in similar incidents to report accidents promptly and follow the proper procedures when requesting assistance related to CCTV footage.
