Another vehicle strikes cow on R67 as secondary hazard unfolds

Another vehicle has collided with a cow, further highlighting the ongoing danger posed by roaming livestock across the Chris Hani District.

The latest incident occurred at about 18:30 on Monday, 13 July, on the R67 just outside Whittlesea.

No injuries were reported.

However, shortly after the collision, several vehicles reportedly stopped at the scene while people began slaughtering the dead animal, creating a second traffic hazard for motorists travelling along the busy route.

It is not known who the individuals were or whether they were the owners of the animal.

The incident comes just days after Komani News reported that at least 12 livestock-related crashes had been recorded across the district since the beginning of June, leaving 27 people injured and one person dead.

Those incidents include:

• 6 June – R61 near Tarkastad: Six people injured.
• 7 June – N6 near Lesseyton: One person injured.
• 8 June – R61: One person injured.
• 10 June – Near Komani: Three people injured.
• 12 June – R67 near Tambo Village: Two people injured.
• 14 June – R61: One woman killed and five others injured.
• 19 June – N6 near Lesseyton: No injuries.
• 27 June – R61 near Qombolo: Five people injured.
• 5 July – R61 outside Komani: One person injured.
• 6 July – R56 near Indwe: No injuries.
• 6 July – R67 near Tambo Village: No injuries.
• 11 July – R61 near Qamata Basin: Three people injured.
• 13 July – R67 outside Whittlesea: No injuries.

With Monday evening’s collision, Komani News has now recorded at least 13 livestock-related crashes across the Chris Hani District since the beginning of June.

Those crashes have left 27 people injured and claimed one life.

The latest incident also highlights another concern. While the collision itself caused no injuries, vehicles stopping in the roadway after the crash created an additional hazard for approaching motorists.

As livestock-related crashes continue to occur on the district’s roads, many motorists are calling for stronger measures to prevent animals from wandering onto busy routes before more lives are lost.
