Chantel King Represents Eastern Cape at Commonwealth Women’s Workshop

Eastern Cape MPL and Democratic Alliance member Chantel King is representing the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature at the Commonwealth Women’s Parliament Gender Sensitisation Workshop this week.

King is also serving as one of the workshop’s panellists, where she is presenting on the topic, “Equipping women to lead through skills, education and political participation.”

In a social media post, King said the discussion focuses on gender mainstreaming, increasing women’s participation in executive leadership, and empowering more women to enter political leadership through education and skills development.

“This is an important topic to talk about gender mainstreaming and the involvement of women in leadership at executive level, as well as the development and empowerment of women to access political leadership,” she said.

The workshop brings together women parliamentarians and other stakeholders from across the Commonwealth to discuss ways of strengthening gender equality and promoting women’s participation in leadership and decision-making.

King, a former teacher at John Bisseker High School, entered politics in 2015 when she joined the Democratic Alliance and was appointed as a councillor in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

She became a Member of Parliament in November 2016, where she served on the Portfolio Committee on Science and Technology before being appointed as the DA’s Shadow Deputy Minister of Science and Technology in 2017.

Following the 2019 general election, King was re-elected to Parliament and later became one of the DA’s deputy provincial leaders in the Eastern Cape. In December 2020, she was appointed Shadow Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology.

After the 2024 national and provincial elections, King became a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature, where she currently serves.

According to the workshop programme, King is an education specialist and advocate for quality education and women’s leadership, with experience in local government, Parliament and the provincial legislature.
