Motorists travelling between the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are being urged to avoid the N2 after protesters blocked multiple sections of the national route in the early hours of Monday morning.

According to information received, the road closures began at around 03:00 and have affected several key points between KwaBhaca (Mount Frere) and Maxesibeni (Mount Ayliff), including the luBhalasi area. The N2 is also reportedly closed on the Mthatha side before reaching KwaBhaca, making travel between Mthatha, KwaBhaca, Maxesibeni and Kokstad impossible.

The protest has effectively cut off one of the Eastern Cape’s busiest transport corridors, disrupting traffic between the province and KwaZulu-Natal.

Motorists have been advised not to approach the affected areas until the situation has been resolved. Alternative routes should be considered where possible.
