Serious Safety Concerns After Crash Leaves Wires Hanging Into Road
KOMANI – A potentially life-threatening situation has developed on Hangklip Road after a motor vehicle accident on Friday night, 16 October, left a streetlight pole broken in half and electrical wires hanging dangerously into the roadway.
The accident occurred at approximately 22:00 when a vehicle collided with the pole.
When Komani News visited the scene at approximately 06:00 on Saturday morning, the damaged pole remained in place, with electrical wires hanging directly into the road.
Of particular concern is that the wires are extremely difficult to see, potentially putting unsuspecting motorists, cyclists and pedestrians at serious risk.
Komani News captured video footage showing the dangerous condition of the roadway.
The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality was reportedly notified of the incident on Friday night. However, by 06:00 on Saturday, the hazardous situation remained, with no visible road closure or safety barriers preventing motorists from entering the affected section.
The absence of visible safety measures raises serious concerns about the response to a potentially dangerous electrical hazard, particularly as the incident had occurred several hours earlier.
Although it has not been independently confirmed whether the damaged wires are electrically live, they must be treated as potentially energised until qualified personnel have declared them safe.
The situation requires urgent intervention from the municipality to secure the affected section of road, assess the electrical danger and remove the hazard before someone is seriously injured.
Motorists and pedestrians are strongly urged to avoid the affected section of Hangklip Road and not to approach or touch the hanging wires.
