Eastern Cape mountain passes reopen after heavy snow
Mountain passes across the Eastern Cape have reopened to traffic after snowfall subsided on Tuesday morning, 11 August, following heavy snow that forced several routes to close for much of Monday.
Although the passes are open again, motorists are being warned that road conditions remain wet and slippery in several areas.
The Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and James Calata is experiencing particularly thick fog and drizzle, resulting in poor visibility and difficult driving conditions.
Motorists travelling through the pass are urged to reduce speed, increase following distances and keep their headlights switched on.
Low-lying areas stretching towards the coast are also continuing to experience cold conditions, steady rainfall and mist.
Drivers throughout the affected areas have been urged to remain cautious, even where roads have reopened.
No major weather-related crashes were reported overnight following Monday’s severe conditions and widespread disruptions.
Road users are advised to continue monitoring conditions, particularly when travelling through mountain passes and other high-lying areas, as wet roads, fog and poor visibility may still make travelling hazardous.
