Motorists travelling on the R63 between Robert Sobukwe Town and Pearston experienced delays on Monday after a black rhinoceros wandered onto the road, prompting authorities to temporarily close the route for public safety.
Officials confirmed that the animal was safely darted and a veterinarian was attending to it before it would be loaded and removed from the area.
Traffic law enforcement officers remained on scene to manage the flow of vehicles while the operation was under way. Authorities indicated that the road was expected to reopen within approximately 30 minutes once the rhino had been safely removed.
Motorists were urged to remain patient and follow instructions from officers at the scene. Officials also advised that there was no need for drivers to make use of alternative routes at this stage.
The unusual incident drew attention from road users in the area, but authorities stressed that the operation was being handled safely to protect both the animal and the public.
Drivers travelling along the route were reminded to proceed with caution and to remain alert until normal traffic conditions were restored.
