The Roundhill Landfill Site, operated by Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM), has been identified as the only compliant landfill facility in the Eastern Cape among nine sites assessed during AfriForum’s 2026 landfill site audit.
Roundhill achieved a compliance score of 96%, placing it ahead of the other eight facilities assessed across the province.
The result stands in sharp contrast to the Eastern Cape’s overall average compliance score of just 55%, highlighting ongoing challenges with waste management at landfill facilities in the province.
AfriForum’s Eastern Cape District Coordinator, Louis van der Vyver, acknowledged Roundhill’s performance, describing it as an exception in a province where landfill facilities continue to struggle with compliance.
“The province only managed an average compliance score of 55%. If Roundhill were excluded, the other eight sites audited in the province would not even have managed a combined compliance score of 50%,” Van der Vyver said.
The findings highlight the significant difference in compliance levels between Roundhill and the other facilities included in the assessment.
For Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, the result represents a positive outcome for its waste management operations and environmental management efforts.
Roundhill’s performance also demonstrates that high levels of landfill compliance are achievable in the Eastern Cape, despite the challenges reflected in the provincial audit results.
