Motorists urged to avoid snow-affected Eastern Cape roads

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has urged motorists to postpone non-essential travel as severe winter weather continues to affect several parts of the province.

Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose said road maintenance and traffic law enforcement teams remained on high alert on Wednesday as snowfall and dangerous driving conditions persisted.

Active snowfall was being monitored on the R56 between Matatiele and Mount Fletcher, as well as the R58 between Lady Grey and Ekhephini.

Although no crashes had been reported on the affected routes at the time of the update, road surfaces remained wet and extremely slippery.

“We appeal to all motorists to postpone non-essential travel where possible,” Binqose said.

“If you must travel, reduce your speed, switch on your headlights, increase the following distance, and be alert at all times.”

Road users are advised to monitor official updates before travelling, as weather and road conditions may change quickly.
