Komani Weather: SAWS Issues Update on Incoming Storm System

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast a significant drop in temperatures and widespread rainfall for the Eastern Cape this week, with the Komani area expected to face severe weather conditions by Thursday.

According to the latest SAWS outlook issued on Monday, 14 September 2026, residents should prepare for a developing cold front that will sweep across the interior of the province.

Wednesday: Dropping Temperatures and Cloud Cover On Wednesday, 16 September, temperatures will begin to plummet. The weather map indicates that the region between Cradock and Mthatha, including Komani, will fall into a distinct “COLD” zone. While the morning may start partly cloudy, a prominent cloud boundary is expected to move across the interior, bringing cooler conditions and brisk winds of up to 15 knots. Coastal areas and regions closer to Mthatha can expect a 30% chance of isolated showers, though the immediate Komani district will primarily experience the chill before the heavier storm system arrives.

Thursday: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Conditions are set to deteriorate significantly on Thursday, 17 September. The SAWS forecast models show a massive weather system enveloping the entire Eastern Cape. Komani and its surrounding inland districts, such as Cradock and Aliwal North, are positioned within a 60% scattered rain band. Temperatures will remain firmly in the “COLD” category throughout the day.

Further east, towards Mthatha and the coastal belt, the situation intensifies with an 80% chance of widespread rain. Inland winds are projected to reach up to 25 knots, increasing the chill factor and potentially causing minor disruptions, while coastal regions brace for gale-force winds of up to 45 knots.

Advisory for Residents Given the rapid change in weather, local authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions. The combination of cold temperatures, 60% rainfall probability, and strong winds could impact road visibility and local infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to stay warm, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor official SAWS channels for any localized flood or severe thunderstorm warnings as the system progresses.
