Six killed in two crashes on OR Tambo roads

Six people were killed and 15 others seriously injured in two separate crashes on the N2 in the OR Tambo District on Saturday, 29 August.

The first crash happened near Vidgesville on the N2 between Mthatha and Idutywa.

Six people were travelling in a double cab towards Mthatha when the driver allegedly lost control. The vehicle overturned and rolled several times.

Two male passengers died at the scene. The other four occupants were injured and taken to Mthatha Regional Hospital.

Hours later, another serious crash was reported on the N2 at Marhambeni near Qumbu, towards KwaBhaca.

A double cab carrying 15 people was travelling from KwaBhaca towards Qumbu, reportedly heading towards Cofimvaba, when the driver allegedly lost control.

Four people died at the scene and 11 others sustained serious injuries. They were taken to Malizo Ka Mpehle Hospital in Tsolo.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha condemned reckless and negligent driving and urged motorists to obey traffic regulations.

The MEC also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol, while extending condolences to the families of those who died and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Cases of culpable homicide have been opened at Qumbu and Bityi police stations.

Police investigations into the circumstances of the crashes are continuing.
