MEC Nqatha officially opens rehabilitated Humansdorp–Hankey Road
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has officially opened the rehabilitated and resealed 27.4-kilometre Humansdorp–Hankey Road in the Sarah Baartman District.
The project, completed over 20 months, is expected to improve road safety and support economic activity by making it easier for farmers to transport agricultural produce to markets.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, construction also created employment opportunities for local residents and helped develop the capacity of local contractors.
Nqatha urged communities to protect the upgraded road, emphasising that public infrastructure is funded through taxpayers’ money.
“I urge the community to take ownership of this infrastructure and protect it. It is their tax money that has made this investment possible, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that it continues to serve present and future generations,” he said.
The official opening forms part of the department’s October Transport Month activities.
