‘I will not be silenced’: ANC member reports death threats

An ANC member from the Phumezo Nxiweni Branch in Ward 8, Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, has reported alleged death threats to the party’s Eastern Cape Provincial Secretary.

In a formal report dated 9 September 2026, Cde Nomzamo Mkati alleges that members of the branch executive committee (BEC) threatened her after she questioned alleged wrongdoing within the branch.

The report, addressed to Provincial Secretary Cde Ngcukaitobi, was also copied to the Chris Hani Regional Mini Secretary and Sub-Regional Secretary Tyulu.

Mkati details two alleged incidents in her report.

She alleges that in May, ahead of the councillor candidate nomination process, a BEC member approached her uncle and told him to stop her from challenging what was happening in the branch.

According to Mkati, she was allegedly warned that she would be “gunned down” if she continued, and that the matter had been discussed at a BEC meeting.

Mkati says she later confronted the BEC member at municipal premises.

She further alleges that on 8 September she received a voice note from a person from Manzimahle village, who told her that another person had allegedly discussed the matter with a BEC member earlier that morning.

According to Mkati, she was allegedly told that she would be “gunned down and killed”, followed by another ANC member.

Mkati says she contacted the person she believed was involved and that the account was confirmed. She said she intended to report the matter at Cala Police Station on 9 September.

She listed her uncle, the person she contacted and the unidentified person from Manzimahle as witnesses.

In her report, Mkati called on the ANC to intervene and protect members. She also said she would not be silenced.

The ANC Eastern Cape and Chris Hani Region had not responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.

The BEC members referred to in the allegations could also not be reached for comment.

Police spokeswoman Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with Cala SAPS.

“The matter has been allocated to an investigation officer. A few statements are to be taken before the matter is handed over to the DPP for decision,” she said.
