Heavy snow forces road closures across Chris Hani
Heavy snowfall has forced the closure of several mountain passes across the Eastern Cape, with dangerous road conditions reported in parts of the Chris Hani District on Monday, 10 August.
According to information supplied by the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the Penhoek Pass on the N6 and Barkly Pass on the R58 were temporarily closed due to snow.
Penhoek Pass was closed between the Kimber Bridge area and the pass, while Barkly Pass was closed between Khowa and Ekhephini.
Boesmanshoek Pass, between Sterkstroom and Molteno, was also reported to be covered in snow and not drivable.
Further closures were reported on the N9 between Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet and on the R61 between Cradock and Graaff-Reinet due to snow and dangerous travelling conditions.
Snow was also reported around Khowa, where fallen trees affected sections of the R58.
Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel in snow-affected areas, obey all road closures and never attempt to cross a closed mountain pass.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport continues to monitor road conditions across affected routes.
