50 Apprehended as Authorities Conduct Butterworth Immigration Operation
Fifty people were apprehended during an immigration enforcement operation conducted in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape, according to the Eastern Cape Missing Person and Trafficking Unit.
The operation was carried out in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs’ Immigration Services and focused on concerns relating to undocumented immigration.
According to information released by the unit, the 50 individuals were taken to Butterworth SAPS for further processing and verification of their immigration status in accordance with the law.
The outcome of the verification process, including how many of those apprehended were found to be undocumented, was not provided in the statement.
Employers urged to comply with law
The Eastern Cape Missing Person and Trafficking Unit also raised concerns about businesses employing people who do not have the required documentation to work legally in South Africa.
“We strongly condemn the employment of undocumented migrants and urge employers to comply with South African immigration and labour laws,” the unit said.
Employers are required to ensure that foreign nationals employed by their businesses have the necessary legal documentation and authorisation to work in the country.
Warning over marriages of convenience
The unit further warned members of the public against so-called marriages of convenience entered into in exchange for money.
According to the organisation, such arrangements could be used to facilitate immigration fraud and may also expose individuals to exploitation.
“We also urge members of the community to be vigilant against marriages of convenience entered into in exchange for money, as such arrangements may facilitate immigration fraud and exploitation,” the unit said.
No information was provided about arrests, charges or deportation proceedings arising from the Butterworth operation.
Further details are expected once the verification and processing of those apprehended have been completed.
