Police open cases as trucks block Ngcobo routes
Ngcobo has been effectively cut off as trucks barricade major roads into and out of the town amid an ongoing service delivery protest.
SAPS spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela confirmed on Wednesday morning, 12 August, that a bakery truck was barricading the R61 from the Cofimvaba direction, while another truck was blocking the road from the Mthatha direction.
“There is literally no point of entry or exit at Ngcobo at all,” Mgolodela said.
Police are now making arrangements for a tow truck to remove the vehicles blocking the roads.
According to SAPS, a large group of protesters is currently gathered in the town, with grievances relating to poor service delivery.
Businesses in Ngcobo have been closed since Tuesday as the protest continues.
Police are also opening criminal cases in connection with the protest.
“Police are busy opening charges of intimidation and public violence. No arrest effected yet,” Mgolodela said.
No arrests had been made at the time of the SAPS update.
The latest development follows continued disruption in Ngcobo, with the truck barricades effectively preventing motorists from entering or leaving the town.
Police are working to have the trucks removed and the affected roads reopened.
