Truck overturn closes N2 near Makhanda, motorists urged to use alternative routes
The N2 between Makhanda and Gqeberha has been closed after a truck overturned near Stone Crescent on Monday, causing major traffic disruptions on one of the Eastern Cape’s busiest transport corridors.
According to initial information, the truck was travelling from Makhanda towards Gqeberha when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and block the entire roadway.
Authorities say the road is completely closed to all traffic while emergency services and recovery teams work at the scene. The closure has severely affected traffic flow along the key economic route linking the eastern and western parts of the province.
Motorists travelling from Makhanda towards Gqeberha are advised to use the R67 via Bathurst, then continue on the R72 through Alexandria and Port Alfred before rejoining their route.
Road users travelling from Gqeberha towards Makhanda should consider using the R72 from the Nanarha interchange to Alexandria and Port Alfred, before taking the R67 to Bathurst and rejoining the N2 towards Makhanda, Peddie (Ngqushwa) and Qonce.
Authorities have warned that the recovery operation is expected to take several hours and have appealed to motorists to be patient and cooperate with officials on the scene.
No injuries have been confirmed at this stage.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area where possible and follow official detour routes until the N2 is reopened.
