Random Shooting Suspect to Appear in Komani Court After Firearms Seized

A 23 year old man from Maya locality in Cofimvaba is expected to appear in the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 23 July, on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

According to police, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday, 21 July, during an intelligence driven operation involving the Komani Flying Squad, Komani K9 Unit and Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG).

Police said information was received at around 12:00 that the suspect was travelling from Maya to Komani while allegedly carrying a firearm. Officers also received reports that community members had been living in fear because the suspect allegedly fired shots randomly on different occasions.

The joint operation led to the suspect’s arrest later that afternoon. Police allegedly found him in possession of an unlicensed Norinco firearm and ammunition.

The team then accompanied the suspect to his home in Maya, Cofimvaba, where a search uncovered a licensed Taurus firearm and additional ammunition. Both firearms were seized for further investigation, including to determine whether they may be linked to any previous criminal cases.

The suspect is scheduled to make his first court appearance in the Komani Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph praised the members involved in the operation for their swift response, saying their coordinated efforts led to a successful arrest.
