Report Anyone Asking R450 at Dump, Says Municipality
UPDATE: Municipality Clarifies Dumping Fees and Refuse Collection Issues
The Enoch Mkijima Local Municipality has responded to concerns raised by business owners regarding refuse collection delays and alleged dumping fees at landfill sites.
Municipal spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa clarified that there is no charge at the landfill site for private individuals who wish to dispose of general household waste.
However, private contractors or businesses disposing of business-related waste are required to purchase a coupon at the municipality’s finance department at a cost of R360, which is a council-approved tariff.
Kowa further stressed that no payments are made at the landfill gate, and that all payments must be processed only through the municipality’s finance department.
According to the municipality, businesses that choose to transport and dump their own refuse are required to first obtain a tip ticket from the Community Services Directorate at the Gardens Office before accessing the landfill site.
Addressing the refuse collection delays in the Dickerson Road area, the municipality confirmed that the refuse container truck servicing the area is currently under repairs.
In the meantime, alternative arrangements are reportedly in place, including manual refuse collection.
The municipality has urged communities and businesses to report any individuals demanding a R450 payment for dumping refuse and to record such interactions where possible, as these charges are not authorised.
