Mthatha Businessman Arrested After Alleged Shooting at Traditional Ceremony

A 60-year-old Mthatha businessman is expected to appear in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court after allegedly shooting and injuring an off-duty police officer during a traditional ceremony over the weekend.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident took place on Saturday, 18 July 2026, at about 23:00 at Mazizini locality in Zimbane Administrative Area near Mthatha.

Police said a case of attempted murder was opened at Mthatha Central Police Station after the businessman allegedly discharged a firearm inside a tent during the ceremony. The bullet struck a 39-year-old off-duty female police official, who is based in Mthatha.

The injured officer sustained a gunshot wound to her upper body and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Police said she is in a stable condition.

Following the incident, the suspect handed himself over to Mthatha police. His licensed firearm was confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation.

The motive for the shooting has not yet been established and remains under investigation.

The businessman was arrested and was expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 20 July 2026, on a charge of attempted murder.

OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, condemned the shooting, saying unlawful firearm use in a public place cannot be tolerated.

He also urged investigators to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served.

As the matter is now before the courts, the suspect remains an accused person and has not been found guilty of any offence.
