The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the Eastern Cape has condemned the killing of Ernest Fiphaza, a Ward 10 councillor candidate in the Mbhashe Local Municipality, who was reportedly shot dead at his home on Friday night, 23 October 2026.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party expressed shock and sadness over Fiphaza’s death, describing it as a devastating loss to his family, fellow party members and the broader community.
Fiphaza was an active SACP member and was contesting the Ward 10 councillor position ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The SACP raised concerns about the safety of political activists and the potential impact of violence on democratic participation.
The party stressed that no individual should lose their life for participating in political activities or serving their community.
It called on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing, pursue all available leads and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
Community members with information that could assist the investigation were also urged to come forward.
The SACP further called on political parties, community organisations and law enforcement agencies to promote peace and ensure that political activities can take place without intimidation or violence.
The party extended its condolences to the Fiphaza family, friends and colleagues.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including a possible motive, have not been established in the statement. No information regarding suspects or arrests was provided.
