Police Shootout in Mthatha Leaves Suspect Dead During OR Tambo Operation

A police shootout during an early-morning intelligence-driven operation in Mthatha has left a 35-year-old male suspect dead, prompting a stern warning to criminals from Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha.

The incident unfolded in Mandela Park, Mthatha, during a coordinated high-density police operation conducted in the OR Tambo District in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The operation, which began at approximately 01:00, targeted specific locations believed to be linked to the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Targeted Police Searches Conducted

Police initially searched a residence in Bhityi, also within the OR Tambo District, after identifying it as a target address during the operation. The search was conducted with the necessary permission and concluded without the discovery of any illegal items. Authorities confirmed that no damage was caused to the property.

The operational team then proceeded to a second address in Mandela Park, Mthatha.

Suspect Opens Fire on Police

According to the Department of Community Safety, police members knocked and announced their presence at the Mandela Park residence. The occupant allegedly refused to open the door. Officers then forced entry, at which point a male suspect inside the house immediately opened fire on the police.

A shootout followed between police and the suspect. The man, estimated to be about 35 years old, sustained fatal injuries during the exchange and was declared dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Services.

No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident.

Firearm Recovered at Scene

A 9mm pistol with ammunition was recovered at the scene. The firearm has since been sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it may be linked to other criminal cases or incidents in the province.

MEC Issues Warning to Criminals

Following the incident, MEC Xolile Nqatha issued a strong warning to criminals who attempt to confront or hinder police officers during law-enforcement operations.

He emphasised that police will continue to carry out intensified operations, particularly during the festive season, and will not retreat when attacked.

The MEC also commended police members for their continued efforts to combat violent crime and the illegal possession of firearms across the Eastern Cape.

Police investigations into the fatal shooting are continuing in line with standard procedures applicable to incidents involving the use of lethal force.
