Tragic Hit-and-Run Claims Life of Eight-Year-Old in Buffalo City
Eight-Year-Old Boy Killed in Hit-and-Run Tragedy in East London
An eight-year-old boy has lost his life in a devastating hit-and-run incident in Amalinda, East London yesterday, 22 December 2025 at approximately 14:00 , highlighting once again the deadly consequences of reckless driving on Eastern Cape roads.
The tragic incident occurred yesterday in the Buffalo City Metro, where the child was allegedly struck by a vehicle while walking alone and attempting to cross the road. He died at the scene. The driver did not stop to assist and fled, leaving the young boy fatally injured.
MEC Condemns “Reckless and Inhumane” Behaviour
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as heartbreaking and deeply disturbing.
“The loss of an eight-year-old child in such a senseless hit-and-run incident is heartbreaking and deeply disturbing. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain, especially as a result of such reckless and inhumane behaviour. I strongly condemn the driver who fled the scene instead of taking responsibility and seeking help. I urge anyone with information to come forward so that justice can be served, and I appeal to all motorists to remember that our roads must protect the most vulnerable among us, especially our children,” said MEC Nqatha.
Community Left in Shock and Mourning
The child’s death has left his family and the wider Amalinda community traumatised, as relatives now grapple with the unimaginable pain of losing a young life under such horrific circumstances. Residents have expressed anger and sadness over yet another hit-and-run incident, calling for accountability and safer roads, particularly in residential areas.
Call for Information and Road Safety Awareness
Authorities are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying the vehicle or driver involved. Hit-and-run cases not only rob families of their loved ones but also deny them justice and closure when those responsible evade accountability.
The Department of Transport has also urged parents, guardians and all adults to exercise heightened vigilance, particularly when children are walking near or crossing roads. Motorists are reminded to reduce speed in residential areas and remain alert at all times.
As investigations continue, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians, especially children, and the urgent need for responsible driving.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the family during this extremely difficult time.
