Tragic Drowning Claims Life of Ngcobo Learner Onelitha Sikweyiya
Ngcobo, Eastern Cape – A young Grade 12 learner from Phakamani Secondary School in Debera, Ngcobo, has tragically drowned in a river, following an incident on 19 December 2025. The deceased, Onelitha Sikweyiya (18), had been described by his school as an exceptionally dedicated student with aspirations for multiple distinctions in the 2025 matric examinations.
According to school principal Mr. Boesman, Onelitha was determined to pursue excellence and was committed to his studies. “He was focused on achieving great results, and his passing is a shock to everyone who knew him. No one could have prevented this tragedy,” said Mr. Boesman.
Family reports indicate that Onelitha had gone to the river with a friend, also a learner, for a swim. Unfortunately, the river’s strong currents overwhelmed him, pulling him into deeper waters where he drowned.
The school community and family have expressed profound grief over the loss of a promising young life. “He was a bright, hardworking young man whose future was full of promise,” said a family member.
Local authorities have confirmed the incident and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
The Phakamani Secondary School community extends heartfelt condolences to the Sikweyiya family. “May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may light guide him forever,” added Mr. Boesman.
