Hope Flows as CHDM Develops Springs for Local Villages

Chris Hani District Municipality Spring Project Brings Water Relief to Mnyolo-Mkhonkotho Villages

Komani, Eastern Cape — Communities in the Mnyolo-Mkhonkotho villages, within the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, have welcomed a new water supply following the protection and development of a natural spring by the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM).

The intervention forms part of the district municipality’s spring development programme, which is linked to Executive Mayor Wongama Gela Sizani’s Water Tuesdays initiative. The programme focuses on improving access to water in rural areas by utilising viable natural water sources in a cost-effective and sustainable manner.

According to information provided by CHDM, three communal water taps have already been installed for the Mnyolo-Mkhonkotho villages, out of a planned total of six. The remaining taps are expected to be installed soon, once the current phase of work is completed. The new infrastructure allows residents to access clean water closer to their homes, reducing the daily burden of travelling long distances to collect water.

The municipality has also confirmed that six additional villages are lined up to benefit from similar spring development projects. These villages include Nkalweni, Gubeni, Nogqala, Mkhonkotho-Nxumfu, Mkhonkotho-Bhimeni and Hesini. Preparatory work is already underway, with the sourcing of materials having commenced to ensure implementation can begin without delays.

Spring development has been identified by CHDM as a practical solution in areas where underground or surface water sources are available. Compared to large-scale bulk water schemes, spring protection and development requires less infrastructure investment while still providing reliable access to water for rural communities.

The process begins with the identification of suitable springs in collaboration with local communities. Once a spring is confirmed as viable, a dedicated technical services team from CHDM carries out the development work. This includes protecting the spring from contamination and installing communal taps to ensure safe and controlled access to water.

District officials have repeatedly emphasised that community involvement is central to the success of these projects, as residents assist in identifying water sources and safeguarding the infrastructure once installed.

The Mnyolo-Mkhonkotho project reflects ongoing efforts by the Chris Hani District Municipality to address water access challenges across the district, particularly in remote villages that have historically faced limited or unreliable water supply. As further installations are completed and additional villages are brought on board, the programme is expected to improve daily living conditions and support basic health and sanitation needs in affected communities.
