Parents Allow Learners Back at Van Coller Primary From Monday

Komani, Eastern Cape – Learners at Van Coller Primary School will return to classes on Monday, 19 January, following a parents and community meeting held to address concerns about the condition of the school’s toilets and overall safety on the premises.

According to feedback shared after the meeting, the sanitation facilities and general condition of the school are not yet where they should be, but are in a much better and safer condition than before. Parents acknowledged the improvements made and agreed that the school environment is currently safe enough for learners to return while further work continues.

The meeting resolved that children should be allowed back onto the school premises from Monday to continue receiving education, while engagements with the school management and the Department of Education continue over the next few days.

The local municipality has indicated it will assist where possible, while the district municipality is expected to assess the school’s water infrastructure on Monday. The assessment will inform further interventions related to sanitation and water supply at the school.

Parents have been requested to send learners to school as normal from Monday, 19 January.

The school has also called a parents’ meeting for Thursday, 22 January 2026, at 5pm, where the main agenda item will be the school’s finances. Parents are encouraged to attend.

Work on the school premises and facilities is expected to continue over the coming days and weeks, as stakeholders work to address outstanding issues.
