Great news for motorists! Fuel prices are dropping Wednesday.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources has announced a significant drop in fuel prices for February 2026. While motorists heading to the pumps will see some relief, users of LP Gas will face a slight increase.
The following changes take effect on Wednesday, 04 February 2026:
NEW FUEL PRICE ADJUSTMENTS
| Product | Price Change |
| Petrol 93 & 95 (ULP & LRP) |
65.00 cents per litre decrease
|
| Diesel 0.05% Sulphur |
50.00 cents per litre decrease
|
| Diesel 0.005% Sulphur |
57.00 cents per litre decrease
|
| Illuminating Paraffin (Wholesale) |
53.00 cents per litre decrease
|
| LPGAS (Maximum Retail Price) |
31.00 cents per kilogram increase
|
WHY THE DROP?
The Central Energy Fund (CEF) confirmed that the price cuts are due to a combination of lower international product prices and a stronger local currency.
The Rand appreciated against the US Dollar during the period under review, moving from an average of R16.84 to R16.30. This stronger exchange rate contributed to a reduction in the Basic Fuel Price of over 28 cents per litre for petrol and 31 cents for diesel.
LOCAL IMPACT
In Gauteng, the new retail price for Petrol 95 will be R20.10 per litre, while Petrol 93 will cost R19.99 per litre. Coastal motorists will pay R19.28 per litre for Petrol 95.
While liquid fuels are cheaper, the cost of heating and cooking with gas is rising. The maximum retail price for LPGAS in inland areas (Zone 9C) will now be R34.74 per kilogram.
The Department also noted that the Slate Levy remains at 0.00 cents per litre for both petrol and diesel. This is because the cumulative slate balance remained in a positive position at the end of December 2025.
