Spring water plan unveiled to tackle shortages in Ngcobo villages

The Chris Hani District Municipality has announced a plan to develop and protect natural springs as part of efforts to address ongoing water supply challenges in rural communities.

On Tuesday, the Executive Mayor of the district, Lusanda Sizani, visited Nkobongo village in Ngcobo during a community engagement under the municipality’s Water Tuesday initiative. The programme focuses on identifying practical solutions to improve water access across the district.

Springs identified to improve rural water supply

During the visit, the municipality confirmed its commitment to protect and develop 19 natural springs in the area. The project is aimed at improving access to reliable water sources for communities located in clustered rural settlements.

According to the municipality, the initiative will benefit residents in wards 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 within the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality.

Local authorities believe that developing and safeguarding these natural springs could provide a sustainable alternative for communities that continue to experience water supply interruptions.

Addressing ongoing water challenges

Many rural communities in the Chris Hani District rely on a mix of municipal infrastructure, boreholes and natural water sources. However, infrastructure challenges, ageing systems and drought conditions have often disrupted reliable water supply.

By focusing on natural springs, the district municipality hopes to improve water access while also protecting existing environmental resources that communities have used for generations.

Mayor Sizani’s visit formed part of the municipality’s ongoing oversight work to assess conditions on the ground and ensure that proposed interventions are implemented effectively.

Community-focused initiative

The Water Tuesday programme has been introduced by the district to regularly engage communities, identify water-related issues and provide updates on planned solutions.

Municipal officials said the development of springs in Nkobongo and surrounding wards will form part of broader efforts to improve water security for rural residents across the district.

Further assessments and development work are expected to follow as the municipality begins implementing the spring protection and development programme.
