SAWS Issues Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms in Chris Hani District
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 impact-based warning for severe thunderstorms across several parts of the Eastern Cape, with residents in the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) urged to take precautions today, Wednesday, 28 January.
The warning is valid from 11:00 AM until 9:59 PM tonight.
Local Areas at Risk
While the alert covers a broad section of the province, specific focus has been placed on several key areas within the Chris Hani district. Residents in Komani, Molteno, and Tarkastad (all within the Enoch Magijima Local Municipality) are expected to be among the most affected. Other nearby areas under threat include Emalahleni, Intsika Yethu, and Sakhisizwe.
Expected Conditions
The weather office has warned that upper-air perturbations are likely to trigger the development of intense storms. These systems are expected to bring:
-
Large hail in scattered areas.
-
Strong, damaging winds.
-
Excessive lighting strikes.
-
Heavy downpours leading to road flooding and pooling, particularly on dirt roads.
Potential Impacts
The SAWS warns that the combination of wind and hail could lead to localized damage to property, settlements, vehicles, and livestock. In the Chris Hani region, where many residents rely on agriculture, the risk to livestock is particularly noted. Motorists are also cautioned that driving conditions will be difficult, with poor visibility and slippery surfaces expected throughout the afternoon and evening.
Safety Instructions
To minimize the risk of injury or property damage, the Weather Service has issued the following safety guidelines:
-
Protect Vehicles: If possible, park cars under a sturdy shelter to avoid hail damage.
-
Stay Indoors: Avoid traveling if possible. If you are indoors, stay away from metal objects and windows.
-
Secure Property: Ensure all loose outdoor objects are tied down or moved inside before the storms begin.
-
Avoid High Ground: Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects, as these are primary targets for lightning.
-
Flash Flooding: Never attempt to cross flooded roads or fast-flowing streams, whether on foot or in a vehicle.
Emergency services in the affected municipalities have been placed on standby to assist with any incidents resulting from the inclement weather.
