SAPS Dismisses Escape Rumours, Arrests Three and Recovers R60 000 in Copper.

Eastern Cape police have dismissed a circulating voice note claiming that five suspects escaped from police custody in the KuGompo area.

According to SAPS, officers spotted a white Mazda with a puncture along the N2 on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, at approximately 06:40.

As officers approached to assist, five occupants fled on foot in different directions. Two were arrested, while police recovered copper valued at approximately R60 000 from the vehicle, which was subsequently impounded.

Around midday, officers spotted two other suspects near a bridge while travelling towards Cambridge Police Station. Following a chase, one was arrested with assistance from private security personnel.

The three arrested men, aged between 24 and 37, were expected to appear in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 14 October, on charges of possession of suspected stolen property.

Police are continuing to search for the remaining two suspects.
