No Houses to Be Demolished in Lesseyton, Municipality Confirms
Municipality Quells Lesseyton Demolition Rumours
Komani, Eastern Cape – 27 January 2026 – The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) has moved to clarify reports of potential house demolitions in Lesseyton, following widespread concern among residents after a municipal vehicle reportedly made public announcements on 22 January.
The municipality has categorically stated that no demolition orders have been applied for or obtained for Lesseyton.
“The Municipality outright distances itself on the actions of the alleged employees who caused such mayhem,” the statement read.
Komani News had reported that residents in Ndlovukazi and Lesseyton were alarmed after hearing announcements warning that houses could be demolished next Tuesday on land allegedly belonging to the Department of Human Settlements.
At the time, the municipality had not responded to requests for confirmation.
The municipality confirmed that the incident is under internal investigation, with officials involved facing potential disciplinary action.
They assured the community that they take such matters seriously and remain committed to transparency and accountability.
While Lesseyton is not affected, the municipality emphasised its ongoing commitment to enforcing court orders related to land infringements elsewhere in its jurisdiction.
According to the statement, illegal land occupation and unauthorised land use undermine service delivery and community development.
Enforcement processes are conducted legally, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, and with respect for human rights.
The EMLM encouraged residents to verify information through Ward Councillors and engage directly with municipal representatives to prevent misunderstandings.
They also urged residents to adhere to land use regulations, cooperate with officials during enforcement operations, and report any land infringements to ensure sustainable development.
This clarification aims to reassure the community in Lesseyton and prevent further panic following the earlier, unverified announcements.
Residents are reminded that any official municipal action affecting homes or land will be communicated through proper channels.
