MEC Nqatha expresses deep sadness as culpable homicide case opened

Seven people, including a minor, have died in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on the N2 near Bhisho/Bulembu Airport outside Qonce earlier today.

The fatal collision involved a Toyota Hilux bakkie, a Mercedes-Benz sedan, and a Nissan Navara.

How the crash happened

According to preliminary information, it is alleged that the Toyota Hilux, which was carrying six occupants, collided with the side of a Mercedes-Benz sedan. The Hilux then reportedly proceeded to crash into a Nissan Navara bakkie.

Five occupants of the Toyota Hilux died at the scene. Both occupants of the Nissan Navara were also declared dead at the scene, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.

The three occupants of the Mercedes-Benz survived the crash. Two sustained injuries and were transported to Grey Hospital for medical treatment. The third occupant did not suffer serious injuries.

Culpable homicide case opened

Authorities have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause and circumstances of the crash.

MEC Nqatha sends condolences

Eastern Cape MEC for Transport, Mr Xolile Nqatha, expressed deep sadness following the tragedy.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life on our roads. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to those injured.

This devastating incident is yet another reminder to all road users to exercise maximum caution, patience, and responsible behaviour at all times,” said Nqatha.

The MEC reiterated the department’s call for responsible driving, particularly on high-risk routes such as the N2, which continues to record serious crashes.

Ongoing investigation

Police investigations remain ongoing, and further details are expected to be released once the identities of the deceased have been formally confirmed and their families notified.
