Sterkspruit Stepfather Handed 25-Year Sentence for Rape of Teenager

The Sterkspruit Regional Court has sentenced a 29-year-old man to 25 years’ direct imprisonment for the repeated rape of his 13-year-old stepdaughter.

The sentencing follows a series of incidents that took place between 1 November and 10 December 2024.

The court found that the perpetrator systematically exploited his position of authority within the home, specifically targeting the child during hours when her mother was away at work.

The harrowing details emerged during the trial, including an account of how the man intercepted the victim while she was performing household chores.

He reportedly forced her onto a mattress and prevented her from screaming before committing the assault. Following the act, he threatened to kill the child if she disclosed the abuse to anyone.

According to the prosecution, the accused told the victim he was forcing himself on her as a “substitute” because her mother was no longer intimate with him.

The abuse only came to light when the victim visited a clinic and was discovered to be pregnant, leading to a formal police report and the man’s arrest.

State Secures Conviction Despite Initial Denial

Although the accused initially pleaded not guilty and offered a bare denial of the charges, Regional Court prosecutor Anele Magibile presented a formidable case. The evidence included:

• The victim’s personal testimony.

• Corroborating statements from the mother.

• The J88 medical report, which provided clinical proof of the assault.

Under intense cross-examination, the accused’s defence crumbled. He eventually made material concessions and admitted to the crime, offering a late plea of remorse.

Severe Consequences for Breach of Trust

In passing the sentence, the court noted the profound psychological trauma inflicted on the victim, who suffered secondary victimisation by having to testify against her primary caregiver.

The presiding officer emphasised that the rape of a minor by a parental figure is a grave offence that necessitates a severe deterrent.

Beyond the 25-year prison term, the court ordered that:

1. The man be declared unfit to possess a firearm.

2. His name be permanently entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Barry Madolo, welcomed the ruling. “This sentence reflects the seriousness with which our courts view sexual offences against children.

Such acts constitute a profound betrayal of trust and leave lasting emotional harm,” Madolo stated. He further commended Detective Sergeant Sibonde for the meticulous investigation that led to the successful prosecution.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) reaffirmed its stance on prioritising cases of gender-based violence and ensuring justice for the most vulnerable members of society.
