Four people were injured when a Toyota Avanza overturned near Engcobo on 1 May 2026, in an incident that once again highlights the dangers on rural Eastern Cape roads.
The crash occurred at Ndungane village, approximately 20km from Engcobo along the route towards Elliot. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly after the incident was reported.
The vehicle was carrying four occupants at the time of the crash. Three patients were transported to hospital by Emergency Medical Services (EMS) after sustaining moderate injuries. A fourth occupant, a child, was taken from the scene by her mother.
Authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities and no patients were trapped inside the vehicle, allowing emergency teams to assist the injured without the need for complex rescue operations.
EMS personnel, along with members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), responded to the scene to provide medical care and secure the area.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been established. It remains unclear what led to the vehicle overturning, and authorities are expected to investigate further.
Accidents on rural routes in the region remain a concern, with factors such as road conditions, sharp bends, and driver error often contributing to incidents. Motorists travelling between Engcobo and Elliot are urged to remain vigilant, reduce speed where necessary, and exercise caution, particularly in village areas where unexpected hazards may arise.
