Middelburg wastewater works hit by cable theft, services disrupted
Residents in Middelburg have been warned of potential service disruptions after critical electrical infrastructure supplying a wastewater treatment works was stolen and vandalised.
According to an urgent public notice issued by the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality, electrical cables supplying power to the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) wastewater treatment plant were stolen. In addition, kiosk boxes linked to the system were damaged during the incident.
As a result, the treatment works is currently without electricity, severely affecting its operations.
The municipality said the incident has caused significant disruption to essential services, particularly those linked to wastewater treatment processes, which rely heavily on a consistent power supply to function effectively.
While no timeline has been provided for repairs or restoration, the municipality confirmed that the outage is directly impacting the plant’s ability to operate as normal.
Municipality condemns vandalism
Municipal officials strongly condemned the theft and destruction of infrastructure, describing it as a serious setback to service delivery efforts in the area.
