Mayor Visits Bereaved Family After Three Children Die in Fire
A tragic house fire in Zanyokwe, near Keiskammahoek, has claimed the lives of three young children, leaving a family devastated and the wider community in shock.
According to Amahlathi Local Municipality, the incident occurred in Ward 10 and was caused by a gas-related accident inside the family home. The three victims, aged 3, 3 and 5, died in the fire.
Two other children, aged 10 and 16, were injured and are currently receiving treatment at SS Gida Hospital.
Mayor visits grieving family
Amahlathi Executive Mayor Councillor Nomakosazana Nongqayi visited the Mdyogolo family following the incident, accompanied by Ward Councillor Neku and Councillor Salaze.
The mayor also visited the injured children at hospital.
During the visit, the municipality provided groceries to assist the family with immediate needs.
“We are here to support families in need by providing temporary relief and assistance. The Mdyogolo family, in particular, needs strength during this difficult time, as these incidents happen unexpectedly,” the mayor said.
Community support encouraged
The municipality has called on community members to assist the affected family in any way possible as they deal with the loss.
Officials said support efforts will continue as the family begins to recover from the tragedy.
Warning over gas and fire risks
The incident comes as authorities warn residents to be cautious when using gas appliances and open flames, especially as colder weather approaches.
Residents are urged to ensure safe use of gas stoves, heaters and other devices to prevent similar incidents.
