SAYC urges action on youth unemployment in Chris Hani

The South African Youth Council (SAYC) in the Chris Hani Region has used Workers’ Day to renew calls for economic transformation, youth employment, and increased industrial development across the district.

In a statement issued on 1 May 2026, the organisation said Workers’ Day should not only be a moment of reflection, but a renewed push to address ongoing economic challenges facing young people.

According to the statement, SAYC paid tribute to the “enduring struggles and contributions of workers,” with particular emphasis on young workers and the unemployed. The organisation linked its message to the legacy of struggle icon Chris Hani, saying his vision continues to shape ongoing efforts toward justice, dignity, and economic freedom.

Youth unemployment in focus

The council highlighted persistent unemployment as one of the biggest challenges facing young people in the Chris Hani District. It pointed to limited industrialisation and an economy that does not adequately create local opportunities as key concerns.

SAYC said many young people remain excluded from meaningful economic participation, despite ongoing efforts and policies aimed at addressing inequality.

The organisation called for what it described as “radical industrialisation,” particularly through agro-processing, as a way to stimulate local economic growth. It also proposed targeted measures such as youth employment quotas, support for young entrepreneurs, and improved access to land and productive resources.

Continuing the struggle for economic justice

The statement emphasised that the struggle for economic transformation did not end with the country’s political transition, but remains ongoing.

SAYC said the fight for “decent work and economic transformation” continues, with young people expected to play a central role in shaping a more inclusive economy.

On Workers’ Day, the council said youth in the region stand in solidarity with workers and called for a future where young people are not marginalised, but actively included in economic development.

Local relevance

The issues raised by SAYC reflect broader concerns across parts of the Eastern Cape, where unemployment, especially among youth, remains high. Communities across the Chris Hani District, including Komani and surrounding towns, continue to face economic pressures linked to limited job opportunities and slow economic growth.

The statement adds to ongoing public debate about how local and provincial authorities can better respond to these challenges.
