Cradock runner defies disability to set record in Freedom Run
A 45-year-old athlete from Cradock is once again proving that determination can outrun even the toughest obstacles.
Bonakele Ntshangase, a disabled runner who competes using crutches, delivered a remarkable performance at the Motherwell Freedom Run 10km race in Gqeberha on 25 April, completing the race in 1 hour and 53 minutes.
According to details shared with Komani News, Ntshangase not only finished the race but also set a course record, continuing a pattern of resilience and achievement that has drawn attention across the Eastern Cape running community.
Running against the odds
Competing in long-distance races is a challenge for any athlete, but Ntshangase does so while relying on crutches, making his achievement stand out even more.
His latest result adds to a growing list of completed races, with supporters noting that he has consistently returned to compete despite physical limitations.
While many runners focus on personal bests, Ntshangase’s journey reflects endurance, discipline, and a refusal to be defined by disability.
Upcoming races already lined up
Ntshangase is not slowing down.
He is expected to take part in the Absa Run Your City Cape Town 10km on 10 May, followed by the ASA Half Marathon Championship in Gqeberha on 27 June.
These events will test his endurance further, particularly the half marathon distance.
Call for support: prosthetic leg sponsorship
Beyond the race results, there is a broader goal behind Ntshangase’s running journey.
A call has been made for assistance in securing a prosthetic leg, which could significantly improve his mobility and athletic performance.
