Ezibeleni GBV Accused Remanded in Custody as Community Fills Court

An Ezibeleni Magistrate’s Court courtroom was filled with community members on Thursday as a man accused in a gender-based violence case appeared for a bail application.

The accused was remanded in custody until his next court appearance after the matter was heard before the court.

Among those in attendance was Lunga Mangcu from the Democratic Alliance, who said many women had gathered to oppose gender-based violence and show support for the complainant.

“I’ve just returned from a packed court in Ezibeleni where the accused appeared applying for bail,” Mangcu said after the proceedings.

“The women in this area are very, very angry. They are aggrieved. They went out in numbers to go and speak out that they do not like violence. No to violence, no to gender-based violence, and no to bail.”

Mangcu welcomed the outcome of the proceedings and called for justice to take its course.

“Let justice be served. Let justice be served,” she said.

She also expressed support for the complainant and all those affected by the case.

“We are all praying for the young lady. I’m also praying for the accused. Peace,” Mangcu said.

The case stems from an alleged domestic violence incident reported in Ezibeleni yest.

According to police, the complainant sustained injuries and opened a case of assault GBH. Police further alleged that she was locked inside a house before officers intervened and rescued her.

The matter remains before the courts.
