A Komani resident has called for greater public awareness around access to municipal waste disposal sites, saying clearer information could help reduce the growing problem of illegal dumping across the town.

The resident contacted Komani News following an article published on 30 May, Could Waste Disposal Barriers Be Fueling Komani’s Dumping Crisis?”, to share feedback she received from municipal officials regarding the use of local dump sites.

According to the resident, she was informed that private individuals transporting their own household waste to municipal disposal facilities should be allowed access and should not encounter difficulties when disposing of refuse.

The resident said the restriction is aimed at commercial operators who are paid to remove waste on behalf of others, rather than ordinary residents disposing of their own rubbish.

She believes many residents may be unaware of this and that making the information more widely known could encourage legal disposal of waste.

“It might be a good idea for people to know they don’t have to pay to dump their own rubbish. Maybe that would help stop some of the illegal dumping we see around town,” she said.

Illegal dumping remains a recurring complaint in several areas of Komani, with residents regularly raising concerns about rubbish being discarded in open spaces, along roadsides and on vacant land.

The resident also thanked Komani News for highlighting the issue, saying the original article had sparked important conversations about waste management and environmental responsibility.

If confirmed by the municipality, the clarification could help address one of the concerns raised by residents who say some people resort to illegal dumping because they believe legal disposal options are costly or inaccessible.
