A Komani-based medical doctor appeared briefly in the Komani Regional Court on Wednesday morning for a rape charge, with the matter postponed to 1 July 2026.

The accused, whose name cannot be published yet as he has not yet pleaded, made headlines recently after allegations emerged that he had raped a woman. The allegation forms the basis of the charge before the court.

He was granted R5000 bail in February this year after his first court appearance.

The case drew a small crowd on Wednesday. Only the family of the alleged victim and some of the doctor’s supporters were present in court.

The brief appearance and postponement mean the matter will return to court next month, when the state is expected to provide further updates on the investigation.

The doctor remains out on bail pending the next appearance.

An EFF member Mzimkhulu Ndevu said he came to court to show support to the doctor who is their member.

“What happened to innocent until proven guilty. I am here to support the doctor as he is the member of my organisation,” he said.

He said no court has found the doctor guilty of any crime.
