Freedom Day message highlights service delivery focus in Komani

Komani – The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has used this year’s Freedom Day message to reflect on South Africa’s democratic journey while placing strong emphasis on service delivery, infrastructure, and job creation at local level.

In a public message marking Freedom Day on 27 April 2026, Executive Mayor Madoda Papiyana said the day remains an important moment to honour those who fought for democracy and to reflect on progress made since 1994.

The message states that “true freedom” should be measured not only by political rights, but also by access to reliable basic services and opportunities for residents.

The municipality said it remains committed to improving essential services and rebuilding infrastructure across the area. It also pointed to ongoing efforts aimed at creating employment opportunities within the municipality.

According to the statement, residents were encouraged to work together in protecting public infrastructure and promoting unity within communities. The message also calls for respect for public property and cooperation between citizens and local government.

The Freedom Day communication further highlights the municipality’s vision of building a non-racial and inclusive community where residents can live with dignity.

Freedom Day, celebrated annually on 27 April, marks the anniversary of South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. It is widely recognised as a day of reflection on the country’s transition to democracy and the ongoing challenges facing communities.

While the municipality’s message focuses on commitment and future goals, service delivery remains a key issue for many residents across Komani and surrounding areas, with ongoing concerns often raised around water, infrastructure, and municipal services.
