Hala Chief Arrested Following Alleged Assault on Elder Brother
A 53-year-old chief from Hala 2 has been arrested after allegedly assaulting his elder brother, a 59-year-old chief from Qamata, during an incident near RV Maneli School earlier this month.
According to a statement issued by the Eastern Cape SAPS, the alleged incident took place on 12 June 2026 while the complainant was sitting inside his parked vehicle waiting for community members to arrive for a circumcision awareness meeting in the area.
Police said the complainant alleged that his younger brother arrived at the scene and questioned why he was there. According to SAPS, the complainant further alleged that the discussion related to a letter which he claimed instructed him to vacate the Traditional Council.
It is further alleged that the suspect opened the driver’s door of the vehicle and assaulted his brother with a wooden stick, fists and booted feet.
The complainant reportedly sustained several injuries, including an open wound to the head, and later reported the matter to Cacadu police.
An assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) case, described by police as domestic violence-related, was subsequently opened and the suspect was arrested.
Police said the accused was expected to appear in the Cacadu Magistrate’s Court on 15 June 2026. The outcome of the court appearance was not immediately available at the time of publication.
Chris Hani District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph expressed disappointment over the alleged incident.
“The District Commissioner is disappointed at such conduct by people whom society has high regard for,” SAPS said in the statement.
The matter remains before the courts and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
