Chris Hani Fighters Shine at Eastern Cape Championships
Chris Hani District’s amateur boxers punched above their weight at the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organization Provincial Championships held in Mthatha recently, returning home with a haul of gold, silver and bronze medals.
Chris Hani Amateur Boxing Organisation’s Mabhuti Mapeyi congratulated the district’s pugilists for their “stunning performance” against the province’s best. He said the focus now shifts to the national championships later this year.
“All our boxers performed well as they competed against the best in the province. Their next hurdle is to go and represent the province at the national championships later this year,” Mapeyi said.
Worship Chauke from WSU Boxing team and Linomtha Rhangana form the female division came home with the districts two gold medals.
While Thandawayo Zenzile, Ngxathu, Iviwe Damesi and Kamva Mbango took silver.
Four other boxers claimed bronze medals.
Mapeyi praised WSU’s Worship Chauke in particular: “Red is our boxer from WSU Boxing team. We manager to have medals.”
The provincial championships act as selection trials for the national tournament. With 2 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals, Chris Hani District will send a strong contingent to fly the province’s flag.
