One Dead, Two Hospitalised After Machibini Assault

Correction: The alleged assault happened in Machibini, not Ilinge Location, as earlier reported. Ilinge Police are investigating the case.

Five suspects aged between 41 and 46 have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder and attempted murder of three men accused of stealing copper cable in Machibini.

Police confirmed that the suspects were arrested on 4 August 2026 after the three victims were allegedly assaulted. One man has since died, while two others remain in hospital.

Captain Yolisa Mgolodela said Ilinge Police are investigating charges of murder and attempted murder.

“Ilinge Police can attest to the fact that five suspects were arrested on 04 August 2026 for allegations of murder and attempted murder,” she said.

According to police, the victims were allegedly assaulted after being accused of copper theft. Witnesses told police the boys were left for several hours before they were taken to hospital.

Komani News has since received video footage which appears to show the victims shortly after the alleged assault. The footage contains distressing scenes.

Police said a community meeting was later held, where those allegedly involved implicated themselves and described the alleged assault.

The five suspects were expected to appear in the Ezibeleni Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 6 August 2026.
