One dead, 32 injured in Greyhound crash on Penhoek Pass
A fatal collision involving a Greyhound bus and a VW Tiago left one person dead and 32 others injured late on Tuesday night at the foot of Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and Jamestown.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport confirmed that the crash occurred at approximately 22:30 on 25 November. The collision was described as a head-on impact between the two vehicles.
The driver of the VW Tiago died at the scene after being trapped inside the vehicle. Authorities stated that the deceased could not be removed immediately due to the extent of the entrapment.
Injuries and medical response
Of the 32 injured individuals:
-
1 person sustained critical injuries and was transported to Frontier Hospital in Komani for urgent medical treatment.
-
31 passengers sustained injuries but declined transportation to hospital after being assessed by emergency medical personnel.
The Department of Transport did not specify the nature of the injuries but confirmed that medical services attended to all passengers at the scene.
Emergency teams worked through the night to assist the injured, stabilise the critically injured patient and secure the scene.
Traffic disruption on the N6
The crash resulted in delays on the N6 as emergency workers, traffic officials and rescue personnel operated in low-visibility night-time conditions. Vehicles were allowed to pass the crash site slowly while responders worked to clear the scene.
The N6 is a major route connecting Komani and Jamestown, often used by long-distance buses, trucks, and commuter traffic.
Investigation continues
Authorities have not yet released details regarding the cause of the head-on collision. A formal investigation is under way and further official information is expected once assessments and accident reconstruction are completed.
