“No bail!”: EFF leads march for justice after brutal Aliwal North murder
Residents and members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Walter Sisulu sub-region took to the streets in Aliwal North this week, marching to the local magistrate’s court in a show of support for the late Aviwe Namba, who was allegedly brutally murdered by her boyfriend.
The demonstration, which drew a crowd of activists and community members, was held outside the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court, where protestors demanded that the accused be denied bail. Placards bearing messages against gender-based violence (GBV) and calls for justice for Aviwe were visible throughout the gathering.
EFF members used the march to highlight ongoing concerns about violence against women in the region, calling for stricter action against perpetrators of such crimes. They emphasised that granting bail in cases involving serious allegations of violence against women undermines public trust in the justice system and places communities at risk.
“We are here to demand justice for Aviwe and to ensure that those who commit such horrific acts are not allowed back into society while awaiting trial,” said one of the organisers during the protest.
The killing of Aviwe Namba has sparked anger and renewed debate around the handling of GBV-related cases in South Africa. Community members expressed fears that suspects in similar cases are often released on bail, which they say can intimidate witnesses and traumatise families further.
Police have confirmed that a case of murder is under investigation, and the suspect is expected to appear in court. Authorities have not yet released further details surrounding the circumstances of the incident.
The march remained peaceful, with a visible police presence monitoring the situation outside the court.
As the case proceeds, the community and activists alike say they will continue to closely follow developments, calling for accountability and justice for Aviwe Namba.
