Nelson Mandela Bay Approves R679m Infrastructure Adjustment Budget
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has approved a R679,551,777 Adjustment Budget to upgrade water and electricity infrastructure across the Metro.
Speaking at a Full Council meeting on March 5, 2026, Executive Mayor Councillor Babalwa Lobishe announced that R482,439,350 will be allocated to water-related infrastructure, including borehole exploration, pipeline construction, and water meter installation.
“This investment demonstrates our commitment to achieving long-term water security for our city,” Lobishe said.
The Metro has been intensifying water infrastructure investment since the seven-year drought that ended two years ago.
She said the budget will also allocate R197,112,427 to electricity infrastructure, focusing on substation upgrades, power transformer refurbishment, and electrification of informal areas.
“This aligns with our ambition to position Nelson Mandela Bay as an investment destination of choice,” Lobishe added.
The Adjustment Budget was approved in line with the Municipal Finance Management Act and other relevant legislation, ensuring transparency and accountability.
Chief Financial Officer Jackson Ngcelwane emphasized the need for improved spending patterns, stating that funds must be utilized immediately to create tangible impact.
