Motorists travelling in parts of the Eastern Cape are being urged to avoid several regional roads following heavy rainfall that has left routes in a dangerous condition.
A public advisory issued on Tuesday morning warns that both the R345 between Jamestown and Lady Grey, as well as the R392 between Dordrecht and Lady Grey, are currently difficult to navigate and, in some areas, effectively impassable.
According to the alert, persistent rain has significantly damaged road surfaces, leaving them muddy, slippery and unsafe for normal vehicles. Authorities and local reports indicate that only high-clearance 4×4 vehicles may be able to pass through certain sections, and even then, extreme caution is required.
Particular concern has been raised over low-lying water crossings along these routes. Several low water bridges have reportedly flooded and are now closed, cutting off access and increasing the risk for motorists who attempt to cross.
These conditions pose a serious hazard, especially for drivers unfamiliar with the area or those travelling in standard passenger vehicles. Flooded bridges can conceal structural damage or strong water flow, creating a risk of vehicles being swept away.
Motorists are strongly advised to delay travel on these routes or make use of alternative roads where possible. Those who must travel are urged to remain vigilant, reduce speed, and avoid attempting to cross flooded sections.
The situation remains weather-dependent, and conditions could worsen if rainfall continues. Road users are encouraged to monitor updates and heed official warnings as safety remains the priority.
Authorities have not yet indicated when the affected roads will be fully accessible again.
