Bloody Carnage on Komani Roads as Livestock Roams Free

KOMANI is turning into a graveyard for motorists! In just a few days, four crashes involving roaming cattle have left drivers traumatised and vehicles wrecked on the roads surrounding the town.

The sound of screeching tires and crushing metal has become a daily nightmare. What should be a safe trip home has turned into a deadly game of “dodge the kraal” as stray cows continue to wander onto provincial routes, causing preventable deaths and heart-breaking losses.

The Eastern Cape is notorious for livestock accidents, but the recent spike around Komani has sparked fresh outrage among locals who say enough is enough!

Komani News reached out to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport to find out why our roads have turned into grazing lands.

Spokesperson Unathi Bhinqose admitted the situation is dire but insisted the government is trying to rein in the wandering beasts. According to Bhinqose, the department is teaming up with Agriculture and Public Works to fix the gaps—literally.

“We have gone on educational campaigns with our sister departments to remind livestock farmers that their livestock is their wealth and therefore must be looked after well,” Bhinqose said.

Fences and Rangers

While many motorists complain that fences are either broken or stolen, the department claims they are fighting back. Bhinqose revealed that fences have been erected, but the battle continues.

To stop the carnage, the department has unleashed rangers on hotspot routes. Their mission? Impound the animals!

“Our rangers have been deployed to those hotspot routes to impound where necessary,” Bhinqose added. He urged both livestock owners and motorists to keep their eyes peeled and be “extra cautious” to avoid more blood on the asphalt.

Safety Tips for the Road:

• Slow Down: Especially at night or at dawn when visibility is low.

• Watch the Verges: Cattle often graze right next to the tarmac before jumping out.

• High Beams: Use them when there is no oncoming traffic to spot glowing eyes in the distance.

• Report It: If you see cows on the road, alert the traffic cops before someone loses their life.
